Coaching practice can be understood through the goals, action, strategies, reasoning and resources of a range stakeholders, has to date been under-utilised in research, but has the potential to produce nuanced, layered, ‘ecological’ understandings of effective coaching. Specifically, the aims of the research are to: Reflect on what effective coaching is within your environment; Provide an evidence-based underpinning for learning and development provision for coaches; Support individual coaches to think about and reflect on their own coaching practice.

Tom Hounsell is Programme Director and Senior Lecturer for the suite of Coaching and Performance analysis programmes at St Marys University, Twickenham. Toms specialist area is coach effectiveness and coach practice which is supplemented with his applied roles at Fulham FC Academy as U15 head coach and Head of research and innovation. Tom’s current PhD study focuses on Evaluating the effectiveness of coaching practice across two football academy development phase age groups, U16 and U18, using the ERE model.
